He Karakia Tīmatanga : The Opening Blessing

Karakia : Whakataka te Hau

Whakataka te hau ki te uru,
Cease the winds from the West,
Whakataka te hau ki te tonga.
Cease the winds from the South.
Kia mākinakina ki uta,
Let the breezes blow over the land,
Kia mātaratara ki tai.
Let the breezes blow over the ocean.
E hī ake ana te atākura,
Let the red-tipped dawn come,
He tio, he huka, he hauhū.
With a sharpened air, a touch of frost,
and a promise of a glorious day.
Tihēi Mauri Ora!

To start our day with fresh minds and open hearts, we are learning to say this karakia :)

Mahi Tahi Day : Photos

Here are a few photos from our Mahi Tahi Day on Friday, 23 February.

A big THANK YOU to Mike Tohill for being our photographer :)

Coastal Clean Up Trip : 29.03.2018

To give our learners an authentic learning experience, we are taking part in a Coastal Clean Up on Thursday 29 March. The trip cost of $5.50 is to cover our travel to and from Mission Bay by bus. We will be leaving Oranga at 9am and returning by 2:45pm. If you are willing and able to be a parent helper for this trip, please get in touch. As we will be near water, our supervision ratio is 1:4 (one adult to four children) so we will need at least three adults to make this trip possible for Room 13. Please send the completed permission slip and $5.50 to school by Monday, 26 March :)

Mana Moana : Our New Inquiry

Our new inquiry for Term One is Mana Moana and our guiding question is...

How can we protect our seas?

To start things off, we have been learning about the difference between oceans and seas. We watched this video from YouTube that taught us the names of the five oceans that cover the world and some interesting facts too! Did you know that the Pacific Ocean is the oldest, biggest and deepest ocean?

Here's the chorus so you can sing along at home :) It's pretty catchy!

We’re one Global Ocean broken up into five.
We cover 71% of the Earth, into this we will dive.
Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern too, Are the names of the Oceans that cover your world in blue!

LOTS of updates!

Kia ora Rūma 13 whānau! Kei te pēhea koutou?
Hello Room 13 family! How are you all?

Update time!

There's been a few changes to our weekly timetable and are also some exciting things happening in the very near future so settle in for a bit of a read :)

Swimming
As you may be aware, due to on-going issues with water quality and costly refills, Oranga School cannot afford to continue operating the portable pool and the difficult decision has been made to close the pool for the term. Research into other swimming options for later in the year is being undertaken so hopefully we will have a positive outcome for our swimming skill development.

Physical Education
With swimming no longer being a happening thing, we will have a P.E. skill-building and game rotation (think gross motor, fine motor, ball handling, throwing/catching etc.) on Tuesday afternoons with Room 12.

Bikes
Our bike sessions are now on Thursday mornings (Block One). For safety reasons, children must wear closed toe shoes. Thank you for your support with this :)

Te Moana Coastal Clean Up Trip
Hopefully, you will have received the notice and permission slip about our upcoming Coastal Clean Up trip on Thursday 29 March. Please send the completed permission slip and $5.50 to school by Monday, 26 March.

Three Way Conferences
These will be held in Week 6 on Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 March. More information will follow soon so keep an eye out for booking information :)

ReadingEggs
We are very egg-cited that every student in Room 13 now has a Reading Eggs account.

Reading Eggs is a "comprehensive learn to read program that was created by a highly experienced team of elementary school teachers, writers and developers to help children become fluent and proficient readers. This resource supports your child’s learning to read journey with carefully designed online reading games and activities that are easy to follow, self-paced, and highly engaging for young learners."

Room 13 children have access to Reading Eggs during class time and know their username/password. They are also able to access Reading Eggs from home through a web browser on a computer/tablet, or via the ReadingEggs app available for both Apple and Android phones.

We are almost half-way through Term One already! We've made an excellent start to the year and look forward to sharing more of our exciting learning journey with you.

Thank you very much for your continued encouragement and support :)
